EuroBasket 2025 generated strong economic and social impact – Tampere among the key beneficiaries
The Host City Impact Study by Nielsen Sports highlights the wide-ranging benefits of hosting FIBA EuroBasket 2025 across its four host cities: Riga, Tampere, Limassol and Katowice.
According to the study, the overall impact of the tournament reached €283.6 million, including economic, media and social effects. The results underscore once again the significant value that major international sporting events can bring to host cities and countries.
Strong economic impact for Tampere
The economic impact of the tournament across all host cities amounted to €218.9 million. Tampere generated €55.4 million in economic impact, making it the second-largest beneficiary among the host cities after Riga.
A key driver behind the economic benefits was international visitor spending. More than one-third of the 445,000 visitors travelled from outside the host countries, bringing new tourism revenue to the host destinations.
The event also strengthened the international visibility of the host cities. Media value from television, online and social media coverage reached €63.1 million, with global audiences growing significantly compared to the previous tournament.
Tampere leading in social impact
In addition to the economic effects, the report highlights the tournament’s social impact. In the study, social impact is measured particularly through increased physical activity and the development of human capital through volunteer engagement. Among the host cities, Tampere recorded the highest social impact values, with a social city value of €613,000 and a human capital value of €204,000.
These results underline how major international events can contribute not only to economic activity but also to broader societal benefits for host communities.
Strengthening Finland’s reputation as a host country
EuroBasket 2025 attracted strong international interest and demonstrated Finland’s ability to deliver major international sporting events at a high level.
The results of the impact study also underline a broader message: for Finland, major international sporting events can simultaneously generate economic value, international visibility and meaningful social benefits – leaving a lasting legacy.
