Jyväskylä launches construction of €210M Hippos sports and research hub
Construction of the multi-sport and research centre, “Hipposkeskus”, will begin in December 2025 in Jyväskylä. The Hippos project, with a total investment exceeding €210 million, will be completed in phases and is scheduled for full completion by summer 2028.
The project is nationally unique and its scale is exceptional even by international standards, bringing together elite sport, research, education, and everyday physical activity in a single ecosystem. Once completed, the Hippos area will provide top facilities for over 30 sports, including indoor arenas, ice sports, athletics, and gymnastics.
The complex consists of four key elements:
- Sports Centre (33,400 m²) with facilities for 20+ sports and a 2,000-seat arena
- Competence Centre (18,050 m²) with spaces for research, education, business, and events
- Ice Sports Centre with a capacity for 5,600 spectators and three training rinks
- Hippos Park, with over 950 parking spaces
The project will create an estimated 2,600 person-years of employment.
Local sports clubs are excited. The new centre will offer safe, modern and inspiring training environments, and open new opportunities for hosting international competitions, research-driven coaching, and community engagement.
